About River Oaks

One of the most affluent communities within Houston, Texas is River Oaks, with more than 1,400 properties and approximately 7,000 residents.  River Oaks is located in the center of Houston which makes it a prime location for anyone wanting to frequent either Uptown Houston or Downtown Houston on a regular basis.  Geographically speaking, River Oaks is bordered on the north by Buffalo Bayou and on the south by Westheimer Road.  Willowick Road and South Shepherd Drive border the community on the west and east, respectively.  The community itself is one of the wealthiest communities in the United States.

The real estate market in Houston River Oaks is mostly comprised of single-family homes, condominiums, townhouses, and some available land lots.  While many properties are appraised $1 million to $20 million, it is possible to find a spacious home starting in the mid $400,000.  Houston River Oaks boasts its own country club and own private security force.  The four main schools located in the River Oaks community are the Houston River Oaks Baptist School (private K-8), the St. Johnÿs School (private K-12), River Oaks Elementary (public K-5), and Lamar High School (public 9-12).

For those who are visiting the River Oaks area, or even for residents, there is plenty to do in the immediate and surrounding locations.  Many residents of River Oaks enjoy such activities as trail riding, bicycling, walking, and hiking, especially since the surrounding areas are so well equipped for it along the Buffalo Bayou.  There are also plenty of museums in the region including the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Buffalo Soldiers Museum Houston, the Holocaust Museum Houston, and the Houston Zoo.

Finding a great bite to eat in the River Oaks area also is not a problem.  There are so many different eateries ranging from local coffee shops and bakeries to casual dining, upscale bistros and gourmet fare.  One of the most popular eateries in the area is Paulieÿs, located at 1834 Westheimer Road east of Shepherd Drive.  Paulieÿs offers up home style Italian fare, sandwiches, and great salads.  For a relaxed café atmosphere, try the Backstreet Café, located at 1103 S. Shepherd between West Gray and West Dallas.  This café boasts homemade pecan-crusted chicken, fried lobster, and wonderful desserts.
