About Houston Heights

Houston Heights, founded in 1891, is a charming and affluent community located within northwest-central Houston, Texas.  Locals typically refer to Houston Heights as simply and fondly, "The Heights".  This community is reminiscent of small town life with tree-lined streets, friendly neighbors, and a relaxing atmosphere despite its diverse population.  In fact, Houston Heights is known to be an artist community with some very well known residents including the anchorman Dan Rather.

The community is home to more than 41,000 people who enjoy life in the family-oriented area.  There is plenty to do in Houston Heights since it boasts many historic landmarks, unusual shops, delicious restaurants, art galleries, and museums.  Perhaps based on its large artist population, the community features a monthly festival known as Heights First Saturday in which many venues, shops, galleries, local merchants, and artists gather to display their work.  Many people from surrounding communities come for this monthly festival to enjoy music, local fare, and invest in some local art.

Many residents of Houston Heights enjoy activities such as swimming, basketball, volleyball, soccer, walking, jogging, bicycling, and hiking, which is made easy by the presence of five neighborhood parks.  For families that have school-aged children, there are thirteen elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school, Reagan Senior High, within the community and managed by the Houston Independent School District.  Commuting into downtown Houston for business is also not a problem, since Houston Heights is only minutes away.

The community offers frequent activities that draw the locals, new and old, out to meet and have a good time.  Every April, Houston Heights features the Spring Home & Garden Tour of several beautiful historic homes in the community.  During the summer, the community hosts the Heights Fun Run, which is a 5k walk or run along the scenic Heights Boulevard.  In the fall, anyone can participate in the Heights Bicycle Rally which begins at the Heights City Hall and ends 15 miles away at the fire station.  During the holiday season, locals enjoy the Holiday Home Tour & Market which features homes decorated for the holidays ending with a market at the fire station.

The real estate market in Houston Heights changes like all other markets, however, in 2006 the average price for a single family home in the community was $164 per square foot.  Even with the national housing market a bit weaker than normal, the average sales price for homes in the Houston Heights area have increased each year, making the purchase of a home in the community a good investment.  To give a ballpark estimate of what homes sell for, a spacious single family home will range from $135,000 to $1.5 million, depending on lot size, amenities, and immediate location.

For anyone seeking diversity in a community with all the small town charm, Houston Heights is the place for you.  Many local organizations pride themselves on preserving the historic landmarks and areas throughout the community, which set Houston Heights apart from its neighboring communities such as Montrose and River Oaks.  The community is perfect for young professionals just starting a family or for older folks easing into retirement.
