About Houston Downtown

The real estate in downtown Houston is booming! In the last few years, Houston has been successful in revitalizing large areas of downtown - attracting both residents and visitors. Today, an estimated 5,000 people enjoy the convenience of living in downtown Houston and being within walking distance of their homes/lofts to shops, nightlife and cultural attractions a figure that is expected to increase to around 10,000 by 2010.

Downtown Houston living and real estate ranges from renovated historic buildings to cutting edge architecture, stylish lofts, townhomes and homes for sale. Many of the more desirable loft conversions are located close to the central Market Square area several of these are conversions from historic buildings. If it's a spectacular view of Houston's city skyline that appeals to you, consider living at the Houston House Apartments - one of the largest real estate high rise developments in downtown. The lack of zoning ordinances has also lead to the growth of several mixed-use neighborhoods.

If you live in downtown Houston, getting around is easy. Houston boasts a system of tunnels, twenty feet below street level that extends for over six miles and connects the theater district, shops and several government buildings. Houston also offers the efficient and inexpensive metro connecting downtown with midtown, the Houston Texas Medical Center and the Houston Museum District.

Whereas many large American cities have seen an exodus of retailers to the suburbs, Houston has successfully attracted retailers to downtown. Today, you can enjoy shopping in up to 2.5 million square feet of retail space, much of it centered on the Houston historic district, at Texas Avenue and Main Street. Some of the most noteworthy large real estate developments in the downtown area offering retail space include the Houston Reliant Energy Plaza and the Five Houston Center.

Living in downtown Houston also means a wide choice of artistic and cultural offerings. Houston is one of only a few in the United States that has permanent professional resident companies in music, theater, ballet and opera. The Theater district is second only to New York in terms of the choice of offerings at any time.

If you are feeling hungry, the downtown area of Houston boasts an estimated 300 restaurants everything from fine dining to take out food to coffee shops. Many of the Houston restaurants offer outdoor dining during weekday business hours; and many also benefit from the closure of parts of Main Street to vehicles at the weekend. If you want to enjoy a picnic lunch, the downtown Houston area offers around a dozen parks and public spaces, including Discovery Green Houston, scheduled to open in early 2008.

Downtown Houston promises to be an even more exciting place to live, with several major new developments in the pipeline, including One Park Place- Houston's first high rise luxury apartment homes for sale in downtown Houston in over 40 years. But the most ambitious project at the moment for downtown is Houston Pavilions, a 500,000 square feet real estate development, planned to open in February 2009 at a cost of around $200 million.

Houston isn't just about oil. America's 4th largest city, Houston has a lot to offer residents and visitors- fine dining and shopping, historic neighborhoods with fantastic real estate and beautiful historic homes for sale & world class attractions. If you live in downtown Houston, you are within easy reach of it all.
